Bilateral relations

Diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Azerbaijan were established on January 11, 1995. On February 10, 2014, the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Eastern Republic of Uruguay was established.

July 27, 2012 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov visited Uruguay.

March 22, 2019 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov visited Uruguay.

April 30, 2019 - Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa visited Azerbaijan.

Also, regular visits are made between the parliaments, intensive consultations are held. Several speakers of the Uruguayan Parliament, as well as more than 20 members of the Parliament, have visited Azerbaijan in recent years.

Interparliamentary working groups

A working group on Azerbaijan-Uruguay inter-parliamentary relations operates in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The group includes 6 deputies. Head of the group - Mikhail Yuryevich Zabelin

On July 27, 2012, during the visit of Minister Elmar Mammadyarov to Uruguay, the Act on the establishment of an inter-parliamentary friendship group with Azerbaijan was signed in the Uruguayan parliament.

The new convocation of the Parliament in Uruguay began on February 15, 2020, and the new composition of the Uruguay-Azerbaijani interparliamentary friendship group, which will consist of members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, is in the process of formation.

Cooperation in the economic field

There is mutual interest for the development of bilateral economic relations. In 2018, for the first time, Uruguay's purchase of approximately $85 million worth of oil from Azerbaijan attracted attention in bilateral trade. As a result, Azerbaijan is one of the 5 countries that sell the most oil to Uruguay. The "Agreement on economic, trade and technical cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay" signed during the visit of Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa to Azerbaijan in May 2019 is important in terms of creating a normative basis for economic relations.
